Bathroom trends set to take off in 2016

From eclectic textures to trough sinks and steam showers, which bathroom trends will take flight this year?

Simplicity

In 2016, bathroom design will take a simple turn. Think neutral and warm grey tones mixed with myriad textures and surfaces.

There is a real move away from overdone bathrooms which is great news as wet areas are the first to date. Think simple and understated.

Eclecticism

Whether it’s combining matte finishes (coarse stone) with super shiny ones (high-gloss cabinetry and glass comes to mind), this year will see a move toward a more eclectic, textural feel in the bathroom.

I suspect people will begin mixing tile sizes and laying different tile patterns too.

As we’ve seen with the subway tile trend, there are many ways to lay the same tile.

Industrial accents

In keeping with today’s popular industrial aesthetic, there will be plenty of metal and timber accents in bathrooms this year. Think wood-grain printed tiles or cupboards plus black tapware and other interesting hardware features.

Overall, the looks is very cool and masculine feel and it’s here to stay for a while.

Feature lighting

Lighting will continue to grow in importance in bathroom spaces this year and not just from a functional perspective. Feature lighting has become more and more popular and this year it will really take off.

Think tailored lighting above your bathroom mirror, decorative pendant lights or even just dimmable switches to set the mood in the bathroom.

The home spa

An extension of the idea that the home is a sanctuary, we will see bathrooms become relaxing spaces rather than purely utilitarian ones.

Spa body showers and seated wash spaces are just two examples of this trend.

Think of your bathroom as providing a spa experience at home.

Stone

Natural stone and their faux equivalents are going to remain a strong trend in 2016.

Marble is timeless.

It’s the natural, earthy aesthetic that makes this trend so enduring.

Technology

I think we’ll see more steam showers and anti-fog mirrors this year. If we have the capability, why not use it?

The bathroom can be, not only a sanctuary, but a highly functional space too.

A steam shower is essentially a steam or sauna room – it’s great for relaxing at the end of a long day and in keeping with the aforementioned home spa trend.

Sinks

The popularity of under mount and trough sinks will continue to rise. Not only do they look great due to their clean, minimalist lines, they also suit the compact spaces of modern living.

They are also practical, simple and chic.
